- Darka thanked Shelley and Lori for organizing the wine and cheese portion of today’s meeting.
- Minutes from last meeting were circulated. There were no proposed changes. Motion: Lori Lewyta moved to adopt the minutes from the November 15, 2010 meeting as written by Brandie Yanick. Seconded by Catherine Medwechuk. Motion carried.
Old Business
- Welcome books- Shelley reported that the Kindergarten open house is March 8, so books will be done and printed in February sometime.
- Ukraine Trip- Lesia reported that the bottle drive that was initially going to be planned for January will not be organized; people are going to collect their own and do it that way. There is a meeting with Vince on Wednesday to firm up the itinerary. The Parent meeting is scheduled to be held Jan 20, 2011. Grade 8/9’s have mostly finished their letters to be mailed out to the twin school in Ukraine so that the visit can be coordinated. There has finally been contact with our sister school in Ukraine and they are very excited to have our students and will welcome them with open arms. We have all the contact information for them. Darka questioned whether or not to give something (bracelets) to the students in our twin school. “One culture, two spirits” is along the lines of the bracelets. These will be donated by BUCPS for students/orphans and others that the students meet in Ukraine.
- 30th Anniversary Artist in Residence Project. Darka reported that some money has come in from granting sources. She attended the cheque presentation for County Clothesline. Darka is still waiting to hear back on one grant application to URDC.Dates are being finalized for Dr. Brian Cherwick to come in to work with the students.
- Awards For JV and ABJ awards, it was previously discussed about the possibility of revisiting the awards re: more money, moving some awards from JV ceremony to 6/9/11 ceremony, and the possibility of discontinuing “Most Improved” award. JV staff did discuss it and they would prefer that some awards be moved to the 6/9/11. It was also decided to rename the “Most Improved” award to the “Molodetz” award. Only concern about moving some awards to 6/9/11 is that grade 7/8 are not at 6/9/11. Staff will revisit this. Values? Some are $40 and some are $50. The amounts came about because originally they only had so much money to work with. Motion: Iris moved to make all awards $50 and to change the name of the “Most Improved” award to the “Molodetz” award. Seconded by Catherine. All in favour. Motion carried.
- #1 set of prints donation option- Iris reported that she emailed the Strathcona County contact, but has had no response as of yet. She will continue to look into this. Iris will try to talk to Linda Osinchuk directly.
- Festival of Trees- Darka would like to thank Brenda Marusin, who did the tree decorating. We received a picture from the Strathcona County volunteer group that organizes the event. Darka believes the tree went for $300-$500.
- St. Nicholas- Thanks to Nadine Yacey and Kim Ewasiuk for organizing the St. Nicholas visit. See attached note. Thanks to Dionne Chwok, Tracey Ewaskiw and Nadine Yacey for helping stuff the bags. Dionne may take on the project in the future. Some discussion regarding ornaments that did not make it home as kids didn’t want them….do we want to revisit giving the ornaments in the bags. Or if they don’t want the ornament, please leave it. Clint reported it went great. Kids loved it! Jr. High’s responded very well and were very respectful. CD’s of photos were supplied by Kim as well.
- Sviat Vechir- Jan 21 is the new date. Special guests include Bishop David, Tim Uppal, Councilors Vic Budzinski and Roxanne Carr. The students have done some of the cooking, but most will be done the Thurs before.
- Grade 6 Malanka- email update received from Kim Ewaskiak - BUCPS has been invited. It is Friday Jan 21. Catherine will let Kim know if she can attend on behalf of BUCPS. Skit is coming along. Millenia is performing. Sandy Bugera catering. All is going well for preparations.
- Feast of Jordan- is scheduled for Jan 18 at 2pm at FKK. Bishop David can’t make it. Fr. Rendy will be doing the ceremony. Power Point will be ready by them. Formal invites to BUCPS and Board will be sent out in the next day or two. Clint reported he is making a faux ice cross. Jean Vanier students will be joining us as well. They will also be singing some carols for us. Laurie emailed previously to request if BUCPS will provide bussing and it fits in our budget so Darka responded yes. Students should wear their Ukrainian shirts.
Administration report
FKK

SAC will be hosting the Family Bingo on Jan 14. Feast of Jordan will be held on Jan 18. Darka thanked Clint for arranging for Millenia to play at the grade 6 Malanka.
Jean Vanier
Laurie reported that they will be having a Pajama Day on Jan1. Family movie afternoon will be held Sun Jan 30. Afterschool dance for Jr High students (and one friend each) will be held Fri Feb 4 3:30-6pm. Feb 7-9 will be the Jr. High Ski trip.
ABJ
No report. Pani Dowson will be returning to teaching in the coming month.
Treasurer’s Report
Lori reported that the books are currently being audited. That is all she has to report. Darka thanked Andy and for organizing the casino in the fall. We should be finding out soon how much we made. At that time, we’ll also have an indication as to when our next casino will be taking place.
Committees
Grey Cup tickets-Catherine reported that there are still 6 books outstanding. Reminder email was sent out, but nothing has been turned in yet. We are short $121. Still did better than if we had not decided to give them out. Catherine will do up a note to send home to parents in the classes where books are still missing.
Kubassa Sales- There will be an update at next meeting. Laurie reported that there was only one order from JV….she doesn’t know how to get more interest and noticed the pick up is at FKK. Could the order form be emailed in the future. Yes.
Purdy’s- Katie is doing this prior to Easter. Catherine will touch base with her to ensure she has everything she needs.
Yarmarok- March 5-6. Cost is $50 for table for 2 days. Is anybody willing to organize selling BUCPS merchandise. Cookbooks, prints, etc. Is it worth it? Discussion that if we cannot find the volunteers, it is not possible to have a booth there. We don’t have a lot of cookbooks left and last time we were at Yarmarok we only sold a few prints. We are working on other sales options for the prints.
Print Sales- Alberta Council for Ukrainian Arts- going to sell prints at Malanka in Jasper this weekend. Catherine got them 5 of each print.
Apparel- Bernie reported that she did not have a big order, but it has been placed. Iris suggested for Jr. High and High School we email the information for all fundraising to the parents. Thanks Bernie for all your help on the organization of the apparel.
Sadochok- no report
Archives- no volunteer yet
Kindergarten dolls- Can we have a doll made for a child who is graduating from grade 11 and joined in grade 2? Yes, that can be arranged.
6/9/11- Brenda Martin has it all organized. She has people helping and the parents are experienced. In the past, all teachers have been receiving a comp ticket. Is this necessary at $30 per tickets? Decision was 1 comp per school for administartion and 6/9/11 teachers will be comped. Fr. Rendy will also receive a comp ticket. Some discussion regarding who should get comp tickets. Does BUCPS want to continue this? Hall has gone up $500 this year. Suggested changing comp ticket offer to all program teachers to the fall Zabava and charge for 6/9/11. Good idea. We will do that in the future.
New Business
Pub Night- this was organized byTammy Gordon (with the help of Iris and Sharon Fitzowich) last year. The event wasn’t that well attended but we still made $3500….we should try to run the event again. Last year it was in May – the earlier in May the better. Brandie will check with Tammy and Iris will check with Sharon to see if they are interested in organizing it again.
Adjournment
- Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm by Darka and she thanked all who attended. Next meeting is scheduled for Monday February 28, 2011 at FKK in the librairy.
